How much a monarch tour in Mexico costs

A day at the monarch colonies can cost under a hundred dollars or a few hundred, and a full week near the forests runs into the thousands. The spread pays for group size, meals, entrance fees and how far you sit from the trees. Below, six tours priced side by side, then the money you still spend on the day.

Six tours at a glance

The table covers the four tours on our home page plus two extras from Morelia. Each price is the regular "from" figure per person, so a sale or a different date can show a lower number.

Every GetYourGuide listing in the table cancels free up to 24 hours before the start. Paseos Turisticos sells only through Viator, and that booking cannot be refunded or changed once paid.

The cheapest seat is a coach from Mexico City

Mexitours' coach day from ~$91 is the lowest fare here. It heads to Piedra Herrada, the sanctuary closest to the capital, then stops at the Velo de Novia waterfall and in Valle de Bravo for free time.

The low price has a cost of its own. The coach can carry up to 50 people, the day runs 14–15.5 hours, and the sanctuary entrance is not included. The listing puts that fee at approximately 13 US dollars per person, paid in cash.

Mexitours also holds the weakest scores in this group, 4.1 from 19 reviews on GetYourGuide and 3.6 from 13 on Viator. For a traveler on a tight budget it still gets you to the colony and back in one day.

What the Morelia days include

Starting in Morelia cuts hours off the drive, and the prices reflect a shorter day. Our pick, Alfredo Tour Guide's El Rosario day from ~$179, puts the protected-area admission in the fare along with an English-speaking guide who also drives.

Breakfast and lunch are yours to buy, and you need a night in Morelia before the 7:30 am start. The group tops out at 16, or you can book it private for up to three people on GetYourGuide.

The cheaper Morelia option is Michoacán Mágico Tours from ~$108, rated 4.5 from 30+ reviews on GetYourGuide. Its downside is what sits outside the price: the 150-peso entrance and your food, plus only about 20 minutes at the colony after the hour-long walk up.

Entrance paid, guide at the wheel

Alfredo Tour Guide's nine-hour day from central Morelia to El Rosario, with the sanctuary fee already in the price and a group capped at 16.

Paying more for a small group and lunch

Paseos Turisticos' Sierra Chincua day from ~$250 costs well above the coach, and you can see where the money goes. Hotel pickup on Reforma or in Polanco, a private vehicle for a small group, the entrance and a lunch of Michoacán food in a cooking workshop are all covered.

It is the most reviewed monarch tour on either site, at 4.8 from 60+ reviews on Viator. The catches are firm, though. The booking is non-refundable, and the 12-hour day spends about 3–3.5 hours on the road each way.

A private alternative from Morelia is Yei Tours from ~$200, with a box lunch, snacks, water and fees in the price. It sells on Viator only, and the per-person figure climbs when fewer people share the car, so a solo traveler pays the most.

The week-long trip

EcoColors' seven days from ~$2,295 is a different purchase altogether. The price covers six nights with breakfast in Valle de Bravo, transport, a bilingual guide and the entrance fees for Piedra Herrada and Capulín.

Lunches, dinners, drinks and tips come on top, as do your flights. Our guide to longer stays near the sanctuaries weighs it against booking your own nights.

Costs the listings leave out

Even with a fare that looks complete, bring pesos in cash. Small sums add up quickly at the gate, and card readers are not something to count on in the mountains.

  • Sanctuary entrance where the tour does not cover it: about 150 pesos at El Rosario per the Michoacán Mágico listing, about 13 US dollars at Piedra Herrada per Mexitours
  • Food at the stalls by the gate, often cooked by local families
  • A horse for part of the trail if you hire one (agree the price before you get on)
  • Tips for the driver, guide and the local walking guide
  • A night in Morelia before any of the Morelia tours

If the climb worries you, read our notes on the walk at altitude before deciding whether a horse belongs in the budget.

Where a few extra dollars pay off

Paying more does not buy more butterflies. The colonies are a natural event, and a cold, cloudy morning keeps them clustered on the firs whatever you spent.

What money does change is your time at the trees and your comfort on the way. A shorter road from Morelia leaves more energy for the climb, and a small group moves at a calmer pace than a coach of 50.

Every review count in this category is small, the largest being 60+ on Viator. Read the recent ones on the listing before you choose, since a handful of bad days can swing a score.

Timing matters as much as price, so check when the colonies are usually fullest. Then compare the four sanctuaries our tours visit and which city makes the better base for your trip.

Before you pay

Money questions before you book

What is the cheapest monarch butterfly tour from Mexico City?

Of the tours we compare, Mexitours runs the cheapest day from Mexico City, from ~$91. It goes to Piedra Herrada by coach with up to 50 people, and you pay the sanctuary entrance of about 13 US dollars in cash on top.

Is the sanctuary entrance fee included in the tour price?

It depends on the tour. Alfredo Tour Guide, Paseos Turisticos, EcoColors and Yei Tours include it. Mexitours and Michoacán Mágico Tours leave it to you on the day, so bring cash.

Can I cancel a monarch tour if the weather looks bad?

The GetYourGuide listings we compare all allow free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. The Paseos Turisticos tour on Viator is non-refundable and cannot be changed, so book that one only when your dates are fixed.

How much cash should I bring on the day?

Plan for the entrance if it is not included, a meal at the stalls by the gate, tips, and a horse if you might ride part of the trail. A few hundred pesos in small notes usually covers a day, more if you hire a horse.

Is a more expensive tour likely to show me more butterflies?

No. The size and activity of the colonies depend on the week and the weather, not on the fare. A higher price buys a smaller group, meals, a shorter drive or a private guide, not a fuller tree.
